Dolan Media Company Press Release

Dolan Media Acquires Legal Services Provider — Counsel Press

New York, NY, January 20, 2005 (PR Newswire) – Dolan Media Company said today that it had acquired New York City-based Counsel Press, the nation's largest provider of appellate services to the legal profession.

Counsel Press assists attorneys and law firms prepare and file appeals. Its services include scheduling, file conversion, document preparation and management, drafting of specialized notices and stipulations, filing with courts, and docket and case tracking during the appeals process.

The services are provided by teams of Counsel Press staff attorneys and paralegals who work with federal as well as state courts. They are especially adept at handling very large appeals on short notice and work with nearly all of the nation's top law firms, Dolan said. The company handles more than 8,000 appeals in a typical year.

The transaction was announced jointly by Dolan Media President and Chief Executive James P. Dolan and Counsel Press Chief Executive Victor von Klemperer.

"Victor has built this business into an industry leader, and we intend to continue his record of growth and achievement," Dolan said.

Based at 520 Eighth Avenue in midtown Manhattan, 65-year-old Counsel Press also has operations in Buffalo, NY; Iselin, NJ; Philadelphia; Washington, DC; Richmond, VA; and Los Angeles.

Counsel Press also assists clients in obtaining admissions and credentials needed to argue before certain courts and, in New York state, provides document and calendar tracking.

It also provides "e-brief services," converting paper files containing case citations, transcripts, exhibits, and pleadings as well as audio and video presentations into integrated and hyperlinked electronic media that can be delivered on CD-ROM or via the Internet. It also sells its document-handling services to the real estate industry.

Dolan also announced the promotion of Vice President David Weeden to president, replacing von Klemperer. Weeden will report to Dolan Media Executive Vice President Scott J. Pollei.

All 74 staff members of Counsel Press will be retained, Weeden said.

Dolan Media has been in the appellate services business since 1998, when it acquired the Rochester, NY, Daily Record.

Pollei said he expected Counsel Press and Dolan Media's law newspapers to work together on marketing projects and in product development.

This transaction continued Dolan Media growth in serving the legal profession. Dolan said law information and services now provide well over half the company's revenues. Last September it acquired Boston-based Lawyers Weekly USA and 13 regional Lawyers Weekly titles.

Closely held Dolan Media, based in Minneapolis, is a leading provider of highly targeted, specialized business information products and services. It operates daily and weekly business newspapers, including law and business publications and electronic information services, in 21 U.S. metro markets.

Dolan's Greene & Associates telemarketing unit is a leading business-to-business teleservices company based in Lincolnshire, IL, with call centers in Manchester and Independence, IA.
